Larissa Downes
Larissa was born in Hong Kong and has ended up
spending most of her life here. After secondary
school and university in England she ventured
Down Under for ‘a year off’, stopping in Hong
Kong ‘on the way home’ for what was meant
to be a two-week stay to revisit old haunts. That
stopover turned into 23 years (and counting)
and she never did make it back to live in England.
Happily married and with two second-generation Hong Kong-born kids,
Larissa has now long called Hong Kong home – despite her Cantonese
being non-existent. A major in English Literature, she has forged an
unlikely 16-year career in banking and dips her toes occasionally into
feature writing for
Playtimes
.
Angela Baura
Angela was born and bred in not-so-sunny
England, where she spent her childhood
years performing on stage, writing poetry and
reading books. Engrossed in the world of words,
she forgot to apply to universities. She hastily
copied her friend’s application forms and found
herself studying information technology for
three tedious years. After an uninspiring stint in IT consulting, she parted
ways with programming and pursued a rewarding career in public
relations. In 2006, Angela and her husband moved to Hong Kong, where
she now spends her adult years performing multiple roles as a mother-of-
three, writing copy and reading as many books as humanly possible, in
between.
